Insulation saga continues

I met with the insulation contractor. I showed him the work that I had done to get ready for the cellulose insulation to be installed. He came back over to, because I asked about some venting issues because we've had some moisture problems. He told me that instead of leaving open space for venting, we should dense pack the cellulose and remove all of the air spaces. My house does not have any soffit vents, and since existing fiberglass and the cedar paneling would cover the dense pack cellulose, it would prevent any condensation from occurring by blocking the movement of moist air from touching the cold roof deck. It sounds like a good idea. I think it will help with the general draftiness of the house.

You will have moisture problems if you use a product like cellulose which is permeable without proper ventilation. If you want to completely fill the void, then look at closed cell polyureathane (you can see some on my blog).

Do your homework on insulation...You can create a lot more problems than you solve if you do it improperly...and insulation "contractors" are the new "tin-men"--they'll want to sell you somethin', leave, and stick you with the mold, mildew, and the lack of performance.

If you can afford it, the closed cell poly is the way to go (it has raised our comfort level considerably). Check out Corbond or Insulstar (this is the one we used). We used the poly on the exterior walls and roof decks...we used fiberglass on interior walls for sound and compartmentalization of heat...works well.
Good luck.
